Along with a dedicated cohort of design consultants Wraight + Associates have a long association with Te Wānanga o Raukawa and the development of their Ōtaki campus. The two latest projects - Te Ara a Tāwhaki and Whitireia (Stage 1 opened in 2018) and Pā Reo (Stage 2 opened 2023) integrate new purpose built student support/ learning and research facilities at the campus replacing a collection of aging donated buildings. The latest of these developments, Pā Reo, affords an enclave of timber whares: Waitapu, Miria te Kakara, Rangataua buildings, administrative building sited within a new campus setting that harnesses the site’s dune and wetland landscape context. Each new development has built on preceding stages of work, transformaing the campus into a thriving hub of learning, social and cultural activities.

This Te Wānanga o Raukawa campus project in Otaki results from an extended collaboration with Wraights and Associates, Tennant Brown Architects, and other designers, and is based on the Living Building Challenge framework. It is a carbon neutral project with a focus on sustainable design. The design of outdoor learning, social engagement and cultural expression supports the Raukawa campus foundation of mātauranga. Tikanga, te reo and te ao turoa are elevated, providing a special sense of place. The judges could feel the āio, peace, and wairua of this young campus within the dunes and wetlands. We congratulate Wraights and Associates, on Pā Reo as a fitting co-recipient of the Karanga o te Tui Award.
